I have never enjoyed argumentative writing, but this time I really, really care. When we do Cinderella this spring, we 100% should tap dance. Why? Because tap dancing is amazing. Nearly every production of Cinderella has a big waltz at the ball. Do we really want to be like every other production? We could switch the waltzing for tap dancing. Roosevelt had live ponies onstage, but we don’t need those. Two pairs of tap shoes make more or less the same sounds as a pony. We wouldn’t even need the drums (Sorry, Via). We could make our own percussion.
Tap dance can also be a very community-building experience. Everyone must be in sync at all times, which I think would really bring our cast together. Tap dancing would also help the plot. The prince falls in love with Cinderella almost immediately, so I would assume she’s pretty cool. It has been scientifically proven that a person cannot be cool unless they can tap dance. I can tap dance (whether I’m good at it or not is debatable), and anyone who knows me knows how cool I am.
(This blog post is about 50% satirical. Tap dancing Cinderella hahaha, but like...if the creative team chooses to take this seriously and make it a tap show, I would support that decision.)
